Description

In 1958, Alma Flor Ada and her family had to leave Cuba after being threatened by a garrison commander of the Batista dictatorship. Her father had dreamed of helping low-income families own their own homes, but several of the houses he had built were sold to soldiers. When the soldiers refused to pay their mortgages, Alma Flor's father went to their commander, but instead of receiving help, he was threatened. For their safety, the family fled to Miami, Florida.
